Ashley Sanford

Hi there! My name is Ashley Sanford & I am so excited to be continuing my education journey with you at DECS as a 4th grade teacher starting in the 2020/2021 school year. After teaching special education in various capacities over the past eight years- both in the Washington Unified School District & here at DECS, I made the decision to change directions slightly and enter into the classroom. I have learned so much from all of the children that I have been given the opportunity to work with over the past 8 years, and am ecstatic to now apply that knowledge and passion for teaching to the general education classroom.

When I was younger I always knew I was going to be a teacher someday. I played school with my sister (who I forced to be the “students” every single time) and wrote “teacher” down as an answer whenever asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. After graduating high school, however, I went to UC Santa Barbara where I was a math major- determined to become some sort of engineer (that part I hadn’t thought through yet). Then after a couple years of college I realized that it just didn’t feel quite right. I remembered my childhood dreams, and decided to pursue a career in education instead. I ended up graduating from Sac State with my Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies and then went on to receive both a Multiple Subject K-8 Teaching Credential along with my Mild/Moderate Special Education Credential.

When I am not in the classroom, I can be found spending time with my son, Rainier, and our beloved Boston Terrier, Sirius Moody Gray (yes, we are HUGE Harry Potter fans). As a trio we love spending outdoors- hiking and swimming (preferably at the same time!), watching nature documentaries, and building every Lego creation you can think of. I, personally, also very much enjoy reading, lifting really heavy things in the gym, and finding various creative outlets depending on my mood. Both as a mother and as a teacher, I have a passion for all things that promote social and emotional well-being, and am a huge advocate for mental health awareness.

I am so looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces every day!
